What does a gift book accomplish?

Believers love to give Bibles and Christian books to each other and to those who have yet to encounter Jesus. What should they give, to whom, when and how in order to make the gift effectual?? Can we answer these questions by considering 3 principles in how God gives gifts? First Principal:God gives innumerable blessings to us all: life, creation, gifts of the Spirit and most notably salvation through the gift of His son. Some of these gifts---life, sunshine, rain, natural healing of the body---we get without asking and even sometimes in spite of what we want. Other gifts---salvation, tongues, discerning of spirits etc.---are primarily given as a result of our decision to ask for them (sometimes persistently) and to receive them. In other words, God does not force us to accept Jesus or any of His special gifts. Nevertheless God is (thank God!) persistent and creative in the many ways He seeks to persuade us to receive salvation and spiritual gifts. Should we not have the same heart? Second principle: I have freely given well over a thousand copies of The Healing of Jabez to pastors and others. One guiding principle in my giving has been Mt. 10:8: "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give" However, Jesus never said to give to those who did not yet want a gift. In fact, Mt. 7:6 teaches the opposite: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you". Third principle: My father gave me keys to the car only when I was 16, licensed and, in his view, mature enough not to kill myself (or others!). God gives gifts at the time when they become an appropriate blessing: "But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil". Heb. 5:14 How do we apply these principles in deciding when to give an "Intro to Jesus" or "Healing" book such as The Healing of Jabez? Yes. First, pray and then read the book yourself then pray again so you know what you are giving and if it's teaching addresses the perceived needs of the person you would give it to! Find out if the potential donee is looking for healing. Pastors tell me that visitors to their church almost always are in pain and seeking healing and/or answers, So that is a receptive readership. Ask the person you are thinking of giving the book to if you may pray for them. If they say "no" then hold off. If they say "yes" then that is a good sign of receptivity. We'd love some more wisdom from you saints on how to effectively give God's gifts.
